Thank you, Miguel. I run a list that's comprised about equally
of Americans and Canadians, and several of the latter have
expressed their kind thoughts for those of us in the States.
It means a lot.

BTW, what sources of current news do the residents of ISS have?
I doubt that NASA would want to tie up the standard audio loop
with traffic that's not directly related to the mission. They
have a fax-machine sort of thing, right? Don't they also have
secondary audio channels where they can talk with people on
the ground about non-mission-related topics?

 No words can express the revulsion and horror we feel here in Australia
for
the act of cowardice that took so many innocent lives.

 There are no words one can say to make it any better and in fact to try
is
worse. Also we cannot say we can understand what you are going through
because we simply cannot.

 Please accept that your are in our hearts and our prayers and we think
of
you constantly.  Australia and America have always been very close and
we
feel your loss keenly.

 Take care and Stay Well.

It's probably a good thing that they didn't think to dump a plane into
a games arena.
Although they obviously intended to cause maximum loss of life and damage.
If  the  architect  of  the attack is nicely surrounded by mountains then a
nuke with a few kt yield should do nicely, thank you.
I doubt that they will find many disagreeing with the sentiment in the USA.

I am shocked, sad and furious about the tragic events of September 11 when innocent people were brutally killed and injured. My
sympathies go to the survivors and to the families of those lost.

All honest people in the world should stand together against killing innocent people anywhere in the world no matter who does it.

Hello Miguel:

I read your very kind post to the packet system in regard to
the attack on America and the world.  It warmed my heart to
read your kind post and your heart felt words.  I was at the
doctors office when I saw the buildings on fire and all the tv
coverage.  It brought great sadness.  I did not have any of
my family there but my wife, sister and myself were just in
Washington a few weeks before.  I was looking at the
pentigon building.  I am sure that the terroist would hate to
see how we have been supported by our friends like
yourself.  We  thank you for your prayers and thoughts and
I am sure the family of those victims would also.

Bill: Thanks for the kind  words. Below are a few of my words.

On December 7, 1941, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's plan for attacking Pearl
Harbor was put into effect, despite his objections. After the attack,
while other Japanese commanders were celebrating their victory, Yamamoto
told a fellow officer, "I feel all we have done is to awaken a sleeping
giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

The giant has been sleeping for almost 60 years but was awakened again
on September 11, 2001 with the same terrible resolve when faceless
cowards committed acts of war against the United States.

SeRe: 9K2USA
Dt: Sept 16th, 2001

Effective Sept 15th 2001, the Kuwait Amateur Radio Society (KARS), in
conjunction with the Kuwait Ministry of Communications, has authorized
the use of the callsign 9K2USA.  All Radio Amateurs of Kuwait will be
using this single callsign.  NINE KILO TWO UNITED STATES of
AMERICA will be heard on all bands, all modes being used by all Kuwait
Amateurs simultaneously.

As a small token of the sympathy and support for the people of the United
States from the citizens of Kuwait, and as an expression of deep
condolence, the callsign will be used until the end of September.

For the past few days many people have asked me to comment on the
feeling and mood in Kuwait.  People ask after my safety, and express
concern for me being here in the Middle East.    It is hard for me to
describe the genuine outpouring of concern, sympathy and support that is
shown to me; not only by Kuwaitis, but people of all Asian nationalities.
People stop me in the street and ask "Are you an
American?  I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am ..".  At the gas
station yesterday, I had to argue with the cashier to take my money (after
he heard my accent) --  Now that would be nice if it happened at home.
Kuwaiti friends and colleagues in the Kuwait Army call me twice a day (and
visit me once a day) to check that my wife and I are safe, and that we have
all the comforts we need.  In a rather unnerving event two days ago, a car
pulled me over on the freeway.  The driver (a Kuwaiti who spoke
impeccable English) came over to my car and asked "Are you American?  I
just wanted to express my horror .."

Am I safe?  You bet.  The Kuwaitis will make sure of it.  Having a couple of
aircraft carriers, and squadrons of fighter jets, and many thousands of US
troops close by helps too!

The Kuwait Amateur Radio Society (KARS) will be doing the QSL chores.
They will put together a common database, and all QSLs will be via
9K2RA.  The e-mail address for KARS is 9K2RA@KARS.ORG.  May I
suggest that an e-mail to them expressing your personal feeling (good or
bad) may be appropriate.

9K2USA is not 'my' callsign.  This callsign is for all people of the
United States of America, and those of all nationalities who have been
affected (directly or indirectly) by the tragic events of this past Tuesday.
I
will not be posting my 9K2USA QSOs on-line as I do with my other
'personal' callsigns.

The actual QSL card to be used for 9K2USA will be chosen by the Kuwait
Amateur Radio Society.  However, I will post my personal 9K2USA card on
my website within the next 24 hours.  This is a blank QSL card, and can be
copied from www.k4cy.com (just click on the 9K2USA link).  While the
artwork and/or text is not original, I believe it appropriately reflects the
situation.

My personal condolences and best wishes to all,
Salaam Aleikum,
Bob, K4CY/9K2ZZ

> _-SOBRE LOS ACONTECIMIENTOS TRAGICOS EN ESTADOS UNIDOS

Todos los mexicanos estamos enterados de lo que ocurrió el martes pasado en varias ciudades de Estados Unidos. No ahondaré

inclusive no haya perdón.

inocentes y NO SE VALE.

Carlos E. Levy”

I am still feeling taken aback by the horrible attack made upon the USA by
these mad people they call terrorists.

Some good idea's are being aired that would help to stop a repeat
performance.

Let's hope they filter through to those with the task of protecting these
aircraft.

==>ARRL PRESIDENT PRAISES AMATEURS' RESPONSE

ARRL President Jim Haynie, W5JBP, has expressed his deep appreciation
to
amateurs throughout the world who have sent messages of condolence and
support. Haynie also praised the actions of Amateur Radio volunteers.

"The shock and horror of yesterday morning's events are still fresh in
our
minds," Haynie said the day after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
"Radio
amateurs in New York City and elsewhere around the country are doing
everything they can to support the authorities in locating and assisting
victims. We know that there are many among us who have been touched
personally by these tragedies, but there is comfort in knowing that we
are
not alone in our grief."

"Never have I felt more strongly about what a great privilege it is to
be a
part of the extraordinary global community of Amateur Radio," Haynie
concluded.

Messages of support arrived throughout the week at ARRL Headquarters from
International Amateur Radio Union member societies and from individual
amateurs around the world. Japan Amateur Radio League President Shozo
Hara,
JA1AN, expressed "great shock and dismay" at the attacks in New York and
Washington and offered "heartfelt condolences to the victims and families
of
the victims" as well as any assistance JARL could offer. Deutscher
Amateur-Radio Club Managing Director Bernd Haefner, DB4DL, relayed similar
sentiments. "At this horrible time, we all are Americans," he wrote.

ARRL Vice President Kay Craigie, WT3P, noted that, on a day when many
Americans were rushing home to be with their families, many radio amateurs
were assisting in the emergency response. "Compared to the sacrifices
by
emergency responders in New York City and at the Pentagon, it was a small
thing, yet a thing that should not go without notice."

==>AMATEURS AMONG THE MISSING IN WORLD TRADE CENTER ATTACK

At least four Amateur Radio operators are among the many still missing
in
the aftermath of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center in
New
York City. The attack also destroyed the major TV and radio transmitting
site atop one of the twin towers.

The hams reported missing so far include:

 * Steven A. "Steve" Jacobson, N2SJ, 53, of New York City, a transmitter
engineer for WPIX TV, and an ARRL member.

 * William V. "Bill" Steckman, WA2ACW, of W Hempstead, New York, a
transmitter engineer for WNBC TV. He was well know in the NYC area and
ran a
number of repeaters from the World Trade Center, most notably the 434
MHz
ATV repeater.

 * Robert D. "Bob" Cirri Sr, KA2OTD, 39, an ARRL member from Nutley, New
Jersey and the ARRL District Emergency Coordinator for Hudson County.
A Port
Authority police officer, Cirri was on the job helping to evacuate workers
from the building when it collapsed.

 * Michael G. Jacobs, AA1GO, 54, an ARRL member from Danbury, Connecticut.
Jacobs worked at Fiduciary Trust Company International, which had offices
in
the World Trade Center.

The collapse of the World Trade Center brought down the master TV
transmitting antenna that served all but one television station in New
York
City, as well as several radio stations and amateur repeaters. "The
broadcast community is in absolute shock," said Hudson Division Vice
Director Steve Mendelsohn, W2ML, who works for ABC News. "We all knew
transmitter engineers, we all knew people who worked up in those towers
near
those big television transmitters, and they're gone."

Mendelsohn said many viewers in the Greater New York City Area who are
not
on cable can only see WCBS, channel 2, which maintains its transmitter
site
on the Empire State Building. WCBS has offered assistance and space to
help
the other stations get back on the air from its site, he said.

"None of the other transmitters exist anymore. They're in the rubble along
with the master antenna system, hundreds and hundreds of two-way radio
system antennas, and boxes and, of course, untold thousands of people
who
perished."

There was cause for rejoicing in the case of another amateur who worked
in
the World Trade Center. Rob Nall, WV0S, reports that his friend, Herman
Belderok, Jr, KB0EEB, managed to get out of the building just minutes
before
the structure collapsed.

 Station Crew Recounts Reaction to Tragic Terrorist Attacks
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 By Todd Halvorson
 Cape Canaveral
 Bureau Chief
 posted: 12:30 pm ET
 25 September 2001
 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Tragic. Awful. Heartbreaking.
 Two weeks after terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.,
 the crew of the International Space Station gave the world a glimpse
 Tuesday of the range of emotion they felt peering down on the aftermath
 from a perch some 240 miles (384 kilometers) above Earth.
 "I think our reactions were the same as everybody around the world,"
 station skipper Frank Culbertson said during the crew's first television
 interview since three hijacked airliners smashed into the World Trade
 Center and the Pentagon and a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania.
 "That was a very tragic and awful event, and we hope it's never repeated
 again."
 Added veteran Russian cosmonaut Vladimir Dezhurov: "We saw it from space,
 and it was a very, very bad day."
 Launched to the station in August, Culbertson and his crew were in the
 midst of a radio conference with flight surgeons when the onslaught of
 the Sept. 11 assault began with two commercial airliners slamming into
 twin 110-story World Trade Center towers.
 Culbertson said a doctor "interrupted the conference to tell us what was
 happening, and shortly after that, we happened to go over the
 northeastern United States and were able to see New York City."
 Wielding video cameras, the U.S. astronaut and his cosmonaut colleagues
 captured startling images of the carnage. The video subsequently were
 beamed down to ground controllers and replayed on NASA TV.
 "There was a large plume of smoke coming from Lower Manhattan and
 streaming off to the south," Culbertson said.
 "We were too far away to see much in the way of detail, but we could see
 where in the city it was, and there also was a shroud of smoke over the
 large part of the city," he added. "I think we were seeing it shortly
 after one of the towers had collapsed."
 His reaction?
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 "It was quite a disturbing sight," Culbertson said. "It was something to
 see, and very heartbreaking."

 Back on Earth, the first inclination of many people was to call family
 and friends -- to check in with loved ones as news of the devastating
 attack began to sink in. And despite their comparative isolation,
 Culbertson and his crewmates felt the same way.

 "It's no different than anybody else who is away from home during serious
 events like this," the retired U.S. Navy captain and former military test
 pilot said. "For people in the military who have done this for centuries,
 this is a thing you have to learn to deal with. For us in space, it's
 similar."

 The station trio, he said, has been keeping in touch and up-to-date via
 e-mail and space-to-ground radio chats with flight controllers, family
 and friends.

 "We were able to keep up with it pretty well and talk with our families
 occasionally about how they were feeling and what was going on down
 there," Culbertson said.

 The view from on high, meanwhile, is providing Culbertson and his
 colleagues with a different perspective on a world that now seems to be
 poised for an extended war on terrorism.

 "For me personally, flying in space is always an experience that opens my
 eyes and makes me not take things for granted. It makes me appreciate the
 world we live in," Culbertson said.

 "Obviously, we have huge disagreements with certain people in the world,
 and the fact that we are not able to resolve those is very sad and very
 tragic at this point," he added.

 "But you can see from up here in space that it's a small and fragile
 world in many ways, as solid a rock as it is. And if we don't learn how
 to work together on it, we're going to have huge problems in the future."

 On a brighter note, Culbertson and his crew -- which includes Russian
 cosmonaut Mikhail Turin -- say they have adapted well to weightlessness
 aboard the 17-story station, where the trio is entering the seventh week
 of a planned four-month research tour.

 "It's great living up here. It's a lot of fun to be weightless and not
 have to walk -- I haven't sat in a chair for almost two months. But you
 have to get used to it because it's a lot different than down on Earth,"
 Culbertson said.

 "I personally felt pretty clumsy when I first came aboard the station and
 saw how easily the second expedition crew moved around and how quickly
 they got from one end to the other, and now I feel pretty natural here
 too."

 Added Turin: "It just took me a few days and now I can fly."

 Culbertson, Dezhurov and Turin have a busy two months ahead.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 A new Russian docking compartment arrived at the station nine days ago,
 and the astronauts and cosmonauts will perform three spacewalks in
 October and early November to outfit it externally.
 Also in work: some 50 U.S., European and Russian science experiments that
 are to be wrapped up prior to the crew's return to Earth aboard shuttle
 Endeavour, which now is set for launch Nov. 29 on a 11-day round-trip to
 the outpost.
 "We're scheduled to be picked up by the shuttle in early December, so
 we're hoping to be home for Christmas," Culbertson said. "But if not,
 we're ready to stay longer if necessary."
 As it stands, Culbertson and his crewmates are due back on Earth Dec. 10.
==>SATERN ENDS WORLD TRADE CENTER SUPPORT OPERATION
The Salvation Army Team Emergency Response Network (SATERN) Amateur Radio
volunteer support effort in the wake of the World Trade Center attack
in New
York City has ended. SATERN Amateur Radio Liaison Officer Jeff Schneller,
N2HPO, says the operation wrapped up October 18. The Salvation Army now
is
relying on Nextel and cellular telephone service.
During its five weeks of service, several dozen Amateur Radio operators
from
all over the US assisted the Salvation Army's relief efforts. REACT
International provided volunteers in the early weeks of the activation.
Ham
radio primarily was used to provide logistical support for the
organization's canteens and feeding centers.
Among the more recent volunteers were Steve and Kim Merrill, KB1DIG and
KB1GTR, from New Hampshire. They did a tour of duty October 7-18. Working
anywhere from 10 to 14 hours a day, the couple called their time in New
York
City "a very humbling experience."
"There was so much devastation," the Merrills recounted. "Nothing read
in
the newspapers or seen on TV could have prepared us for the actual sight
of
all of this."
The Merrills said they came away from their SATERN volunteer experience
feeling as though they had "lived a lifetime in a few short days," but
with
"friendships that will last a lifetime" and "stories that have no end."
"Salvation Army SATERN is to be commended," they said. "They were more
than
nice to us. We felt like a part of a family!"
Schneller has urged all Amateur Radio operators to prepare for the future
by
first getting acquainted with and joining their local ARES or SATERN teams,
then by taking the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Course
<http://www.arrl.org/cce>;.
STS-108
Report # 08
 Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 – 7 a.m. CST
 Waking up to the patriotic tune of "It's A Grand Ole' Flag"performed
by
the Fire Department of New York Emerald Society Pipes & Drums,
Endeavour’s crew was awakened at 6:14 a.m. CST today. The Expedition
Four crew on board the International Space Station was awakened about
a
half hour later by a wake-up tone on board.
A New York firefighter presented Pilot Scott Kelly with today’s wake-up
music when Kelly visited the World Trade Center site with former NASA
Administrator Dan Goldin shortly after the September 11 attacks.  All
the
astronauts and cosmonauts on board Endeavour and the International Space
Station will take time today to remember the victims, their families and
rescue workers in a special message from space, at 4:24 p.m. CST today.
Commander Dom Gorie, Kelly, Mission Specialists Linda Godwin and Dan
Tani, Expedition Three Commander Frank Culbertson, Pilot Vladimir
Dezhurov and Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin, Expedition Four Commander
Yury Onufrienko, and Flight Engineers Carl Walz and Dan Bursch will all
gather in the Destiny laboratory aboard the station to display a U.S.
flag and take a moment to honor the victim’s families and survivors of
the attacks.
Coordinated through the “Flags for Heroes and Families” campaign, which
was initiated by Former NASA Administrator Dan Goldin, several American
flags are being flown aboard the space shuttle Endeavour.  Those flags
include 6,000 small U.S. flags, one U.S. flag that was recovered from
the
debris of the World Trade Center, a Marine Corps flag that was retrieved
from the Pentagon, and an American flag from the State of Pennsylvania.
Also onboard, is a large New York Fire Department flag, 23 replica New
York Police Department shields, and 91 New York Police Department
patches. Those items are stowed away in the shuttle and will be
distributed upon Endeavour’s return to Earth.
The crew’s activities today will focus on continuing transfer of several
hundred pounds of equipment and supplies from the Raffaello Multi-Purpose
Logistics Module that was attached to the station yesterday.  Transfer
of
equipment, supplies and experiments to and from the shuttle mid deck is
already complete.  Today, Godwin and Tani will also check out and prepare
the tools they will use for Monday’s scheduled spacewalk.
The next STS-108 mission status report will be issued about 6 p.m. today
or as events warrant.
